Now, the bad news: That said, these opportunities are not well understood.

There are opportunities  at both law schools located both inside Canada and outside of Canada.

You will find the rules for how to become a lawyer in Ontario whether you graduate from a law school located in Canada or a law school located outside of Canada here.

Law Schools Located In Canada:

Never before has there been such a wide range of joint law degree programs available at Canadian law schools. Many of these programs can be completed in three years. Law school (by itself) takes three years. Why not use those same three years to earn:

-         both a U.S. and Canadian law degree

-         both a civil law degree and a common law degree

-         a J.D. and an MBA

Law Schools Located Outside of Canada

Furthermore, there are opportunities to study law at law schools located outside of Canada. The new Ontario Fair Access To Regulated  Professions Act (“FARPA”) has legislated principles that the Law Society is required to use when assessing the education of graduates of law schools outside of Canada. This is a great thing for both:

-         Canadians who want to attend law school outside of Canada; and

-          foreign lawyers who immigrate to Canada and want to practice law in Canada

Pursuant to FARPA, regulated professions must establish objective licensing requirements for foreign-trained applicants. In assessing an applicant’s foreign credentials, professional associations must do so in a way that is “transparent, objective, impartial, and fair.”

What if you do (or have) studied law at a law school located outside of Canada? How exactly do foreign law school graduates get admitted to the Bar in Ontario? How can you use your Canadian law degree in other countries?

Applying to law school is competitive. You need to think clearly about and understand:

- where to apply (how opportunities for law school differ)

- how  to apply (academic positioning and marketing)

- what are the components of a law school application and how to make them work for you

Regardless of where you apply, this seminar will be important for you.

10:15 a.m. – 10:40 a.m. – Study law in the U.S. – What are the opportunities? How do you use the U.S. law degree to become a lawyer in Canada and/or the U.S.?

12:00 noon – 12:45  p.m. – Your Social Life, The Media and Social Media – The effect on your academic opportunities, your life and your career.

In the afternoon you will have your choice of sessions. For those interested, you will have the opportunity to participate in a “Mock LSAT” using a real LSAT. Others will continue with the series of shorter seminars. Those wishing to participate in the LSAT must download the free sample LSAT and bring it with you to Pre-Law Forum. (If you have already been exposed to this particular LSAT, please feel free to bring a substitute).

On Friday October 22, 2010 the Canadian law schools will be running a “Forum” at the Royal York Hotel – 100 Front St. – 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. You are encouraged to attend. That said, as they say:

“If you don’t know where you are going, any road will do.”

The purpose of the “Getting Into Law  School Course” will be to enhance your understanding of the admissions  process and give you a bit of direction.”

The  topics will include:

- how exactly to become a lawyer in Canada, the United States and the U.K.

- how various law school degrees are related to admission to the bar

- what are your chances of getting into various law schools

- how to ensure that your letters  of reference  work actually assist you in the admissions process

- how to avoid  the most common mistakes  on personal statements

- how does the “reputation”  of Canadian, American and U.K. law schools affect your career  prospects

- Australia?  Is it an option?

- Are you already a “foreign lawyer”? How to get admitted to the Bar of Ontario

What Is Pre-Law Forum?

As you navigate the treacherous terrain of the law admissions process, you need accurate information. Law school admissions information is in a constant state of change. Only information that comes directly from the law schools is guaranteed to be accurate.

At Pre-Law Forum you will hear from, and be able to ask questions directly to, law school admissions personnel. You will no longer have to rely on the “hearsay” within the pre-law community.

The law school application for law schools in Ontario and the rest of Canada is long and complex. Pre-Law Forum will provide guidance on all components of the law school application. The components include: the autobiographical sketch, letters of reference and recommendation, personal statements, LSAT test scores, the LSAT writing sample, grades and the law school interview (if applicable).

In addition to learning about admissions policies and procedures, you will learn about a number of joint degree opportunities that you may not have known about. You will leave Pre-Law Forum with reasons why you wish to attend one law school or another and an accurate assessment of your chances of getting in.

Some Pre-Law Forums even give you the opportunity to experience what law school is really like by participating in a simulated law school class taught by a law school professor.
